Career Management: Career Options

June 22, 2008 – 10:55 am

If you are weighing your career options, the good news is, you have a virtually limitless number from which to choose. The bad news is, settling on one is not so simple. Nevertheless, whether you are just entering the workforce out of college or are looking to switch professions, there is a career out there that is right for you. But you need to do your homework.

Narrowing Your Career Options
There are several facets to consider before choosing a career. Are you creative or analytical? Do you like a steady routine or variation in your work? Are you good with your hands or more cerebral? Are you willing to work long hours or weekends? Is money more important than the ability to make a difference? Think about your likes, dislikes, skills, pet peeves and personality. For example, if you have a difficult time with rejection, a sales career may not be for you.

Most people could not fathom all of the questions they must ask themselves in order to narrow their career options. A career assessment test can do this for you. It will contain a wealth of questions designed to target your work personality. You can then match it to a list of careers that coincide with your results.

Deciding on a career is not an enviable task, yet scores of people are faced with it more than once in their lives. Although your career options are many, possibly only a handful are truly appropriate for you. Our profession plays a large role in whom we are, so choose wisely.
